Continuum Industries trials Optioneer™ AI to incorporate Biodiversity Net Gain in the earliest stages of infrastructure development

We have started a trial of Optioneer, our cutting-edge software, to transform the approach to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in infrastructure development. The AI-powered solution will be trialled for BNG on a range of infrastructure projects such as the development of transmission lines, underground cables, hydrogen pipelines and water pipelines.

In response to the escalating environmental challenges, BNG has emerged as a crucial strategy to restore and enhance the natural environment and is now a legal requirement for larger projects in England and Wales. Other jurisdictions, including the European Union and the United States, are also moving toward similar regulations. By deploying Optioneer for BNG, Continuum Industries aims to streamline the process, addressing the complex nature of its implementation.

Traditionally, achieving BNG has been a time-consuming and expensive process, involving extensive ecological surveys. However, as legal obligations surrounding BNG increase, the need for efficient solutions becomes evident. Optioneer offers a digital solution that brings BNG considerations to the forefront of infrastructure development, saving valuable time and resources.

"Biodiversity Net Gain is a critical aspect of sustainable development, and it is our responsibility to address it effectively. Optioneer is aimed to provide a breakthrough in the BNG process, enabling developers to calculate baseline biodiversity units and analyse potential route options efficiently. By adopting a digital solution, we hope that developers can save significant costs and months of development time per project while positively enhancing the surrounding natural environment." - Grzegorz Marecki, CEO at Continuum Industries

The integration of BNG considerations into the early stages of route development has numerous benefits for infrastructure developers and the environment. By minimising the impact on biodiversity while balancing other routing pressures, developers can make more informed and sustainable route selection decisions. Furthermore, the streamlined process saves time without compromising the quality of the project. The resulting robust evidence supports eventual planning applications and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).

Continuum Industries is committed to driving innovation in the infrastructure sector, and the trial of Optioneer for BNG represents another milestone in its mission to support utilities in developing environmentally conscious solutions.
