National Gas Transmission deploy Optioneer for strategic asset planning

National Gas Transmission (NGT) needed a faster, more consistent way to evaluate pipeline routing options as part of its asset management decision-making — delivering rigorous early-stage analysis at the pace the regulatory environment demands.

The challenge

Asset management decisions move on tight timescales, and traditional early-stage routing studies can’t keep pace. Without rapid, structured option analysis, NGT risks slower answers and less confidence in the trade-offs presented to stakeholders.

As part of its role in managing the gas transmission network in the interest of consumers, NGT frequently needs to compare pipeline routing options at an early feasibility stage. Traditional methods are labour-intensive and can take weeks per option — absorbing time and specialist focus that is needed across the wider priorities of operating a national transmission system.

Conventional approaches also lack the granularity needed to evaluate technical, environmental, and social factors consistently from the outset, and inconsistent GIS datasets across England, Wales, and Scotland add further complexity to the planning process.

The process

Optioneer was configured with NGT’s internal routing guidelines so that pipeline routing options could be generated and compared on a consistent basis, taking technical feasibility, environmental constraints, and social impact into account from the outset.

By standardising the approach, NGT’s asset management team was able to conduct early-stage option analysis in a fraction of the time a manual study would take, with outputs structured to feed directly into internal decision-making and external submissions.

The results

Cost-efficient route options identified: Optioneer generated and compared pipeline routing options consistently, giving NGT defensible early-stage answers without committing full feasibility-study effort.

Reduced assessment timelines: Rather than weeks of manual work per option, Optioneer allowed NGT’s team to share early-stage data across the business and produce structured assessments in a fraction of the time — ultimately keeping costs down for the consumer.

Increased feasibility analysis scope: Standardised metrics let NGT evaluate routes holistically and support informed trade-offs, improving the quality of information available for asset management decisions.

The impact
Traditional method With Optioneer
Route design 9 months 3 months
Resource time 216 days FTE time 72 days FTE time
Route iterations 1–7 days per change 10 mins–2 hrs per change
Major reroute 32 days 10 mins–2 hrs
Bottlenecks High time cost per task Higher output per team member
Communication Email chains, regular meetings, iterations In-platform comments, interactive visuals, real-time adjustments
Use of the Optioneer Continuum tool was highly successful. The team were very efficient, and the rapid turnaround resulted in clear, well-defined pipeline routing options that supported timely decision-making.
