Exelon, one of the largest utility companies in the United States, has invested in Continuum Industries through the Exelon Foundation.
Alongside the investment, Continuum Industries and Exelon will work together to deploy the Optioneer platform across Exelon's six operating companies in PJM and bring a new generation of AI tools to infrastructure development. Together, these utilities serve more than 11 million customers in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
The PJM grid faces one of the largest transmission build-outs in its history. The changing energy mix and load from data centers, electrification, and manufacturing are arriving faster than new lines can be permitted and built. Every month a project spends in feasibility studies, route iterations, and permitting is a month customers wait for reliable, affordable power.
Having supported the screening of over 420,000 miles of infrastructure alternatives, Optioneer is a proven AI platform. It provides planners with a better understanding of local impacts from day one to help them identify the lowest-impact and fastest-to-permit solutions. Planners and engineers use it to screen each potential solution and project against thousands of route alternatives on engineering, environmental, land, and cost criteria in hours - work that traditionally takes weeks or months. For Exelon's customers, this means portfolios that minimize local impacts and costs, reach construction sooner, and reduce late-stage surprises that push up rates.
Exelon's team will work with Continuum Industries to identify and prioritize deployments, sharing what they learn across the six operating companies so each utility benefits from the others' experience.
Through this investment, Continuum Industries joins Exelon Foundation's 2c2i cohort of companies that provide solutions to climate change challenges, while advancing social equality and economic prosperity within Exelon's major market areas.
"As energy demand grows, building the infrastructure needed to serve customers responsibly, reliably and affordably becomes even more important.
Continuum Industries is developing technology that can help utilities and developers make better decisions earlier in the planning process, which has the potential to improve project outcomes, reduce risk and support the long-term grid investments customers and communities depend on.
That focus is aligned with the Exelon Promise - our commitment to support customers today while advancing solutions that keep bills as low as possible over time."
-Faith Davis, Exelon 2c2i Lead
We are excited to welcome Exelon Foundation as a minority investor in Continuum Industries. Within days of the investment, our teams began working together to plan and deliver a step change in how Exelon's operating companies plan, design, and permit grid expansion and upgrades.
